Securing Remote Infrastructure with Resilient Out-of-Band Access

Reliable, encrypted management access for mission-critical sites beyond the data center.

Remote Infrastructure Requires a Different Security Model

Critical infrastructure does not always operate inside a hardened data center. Many of the systems that support energy, transportation, defense, industrial operations, and distributed communications networks are located in remote substations, pipeline facilities, relay sites, towers, maritime environments, and other harsh or hard-to-reach locations.

These environments create a unique challenge for network operations and security teams. Primary WAN links may be limited, weather-exposed, or difficult to restore quickly. Physical access may require hours of travel, specialized personnel, or costly dispatch. Hardware must withstand temperature shifts, humidity, vibration, power instability, and limited onsite support. When connectivity fails, the ability to securely reach and control equipment remotely becomes mission-critical.

Out-of-Band Management for Harsh and Remote Environments

Secure Out-of-Band Management provides an independent access path when the primary network is unavailable. For remote infrastructure, this secondary path is not simply a convenience. It can determine whether engineers restore service remotely in minutes or lose visibility until a technician reaches the site.

CDI’s Port Authority platform supports secure OOB access through LTE private APN connectivity and Satellite IP, giving organizations flexible transport options based on site conditions. LTE private APN access helps isolate management traffic from the public internet, while Satellite IP extends secure access to locations beyond terrestrial coverage. CDI’s FIPS 140-3 validated encryption protects management sessions across these transport paths, helping maintain a consistent security posture from the data center to the farthest edge.

Why It Matters

Remote sites are often the hardest to reach and the most expensive to recover. They are also essential to operational continuity. CDI enables secure, authenticated console access, remote power control, and resilient network management for mission-critical environments where uptime, encryption, and independent access are non-negotiable.
